Extreme Risk Protection Orders
An extreme risk protection order is a civil court order that prohibits a person from having firearms in his/her custody or control or from or purchasing or receiving a firearm. On April 11, 2018, Vermont passed a law allowing judges to issue extreme risk protection orders in certain situations where a respondent poses an extreme risk of causing harm to himself/herself or another person by purchasing, possessing, or receiving a dangerous weapon or by having a dangerous weapon within the his/her custody or control.
