Places that Help

Finding a Lawyer

When you click on your state in the drop-down menu above, you will find a list of organizations that provide free or low-cost legal services to victims of abuse and others who qualify.  Even if the organization does not have a lawyer available to represent you in court, you may want to ask if there is a lawyer who you can consult with to get advice.  Additionally, for those who do not qualify for free legal assistance, we link to the Bar Association Lawyer Referral Service(s) for private attorneys in each state.

For a suggested list of questions to ask regarding the lawyer’s fees and experience when interviewing an attorney, go to our Choosing and Working with a Lawyer page.

If you are unable to get a lawyer or you want more information about the court process, read our Preparing for Court – By Yourself section.
