Included in this list are organizations that provide free or low-cost legal services to victims and survivors of abuse, as well as to others who qualify. Even if the organization does not have a lawyer available to represent you in court, you may want to ask if there is a lawyer with whom you can consult to obtain advice. We list the organizations by the county where the office is located, but many offices serve multiple counties. We indicate the “counties served” whenever possible. They also have an advocate in all Suffolk County Police Department Precincts to offer victim services immediately following a violent incident.

Catholic Charities offers legal consultations to immigrants – documented or undocumented, newly arrived or longtime residents – on a broad range of matters, including: naturalization, relative petitions, work authorization, political asylum and deportation cases, petitions for battered and abused spouses and children, and more. Free application assistance is available for naturalization and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) cases thanks to generous funding from the New York State Office for New Americans. Services are provided at locations in Orange, Sullivan, and Ulster Counties. Assistance with naturalization and DACA cases is free, as is legal assistance through the immigrant Justice Corps initiative. Their staff is bilingual in English and Spanish, and interpretation in other languages is available through an interpreter service.

Legal Services of the Hudson Valley provides civil legal services to low-income people in all seven counties of the Hudson Valley including Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess, Rockland, Orange, Ulster and Sullivan counties. This office serves Sullivan County. Domestic violence services they provide include advocacy and representation for survivors including orders of protection, child/spousal support, child custody and visitation, and referrals for other issues related to safety and support.
