Included in this list are organizations that provide free or low-cost legal services to victims and survivors of abuse, as well as to others who qualify. Even if the organization does not have a lawyer available to represent you in court, you may want to ask if there is a lawyer with whom you can consult to obtain advice. We list the organizations by the county where the office is located, but many offices serve multiple counties. We indicate the “counties served” whenever possible. Catholic Migration Services provides legal assistance and representation in a wide range of affirmative applications for immigration relief, including: naturalization/citizenship, family reunification, green card, permanent residence, asylum, humanitarian relief, T (trafficking victim) visas, U (crime witness/victim) visas, Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) protection, Temporary Protected Status (TPS), Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS), and deportation defense. Their services are free, but many immigration applications have filing fees, but they will assist those who are eligible with fee waiver applications. To be eligible for their services, immigrants must be low-income and living in New York City, or for certain programs, New York State. The staff speaks several languages and can provide translation and interpretation accommodations upon request.

Her Justice provides free legal help in family law, divorce and immigration to low-income women living in New York City. Most of our clients are survivors of domestic violence, though this is not a requirement. Services may include: Legal information, advice and referrals; Brief services (for example, drafting petitions and answers); Attorney representation.

The Legal Aid Society’s Brooklyn Neighborhood Office provides legal assistance and representation for residents of Brooklyn. They assist with a variety of cases including: Divorce and related issues, custody, child and spousal support, domestic violence related immigration relief, guardianships and adoptions; Prevention of eviction, denial of access to public or government-subsidized housing or shelter, representation of tenant groups, illegal foreclosure and housing code violations; Public assistance, food stamps, Medicaid, Medicare, SSI, Social Security disability and non-disability issues, foster care benefits, unemployment insurance benefits.

The NYC Family Justice Centers (FJCs) are one-stop centers where city agencies, community organizations, legal service providers, and District Attorney’s offices come together to support survivors. The FJCs can connect survivors of domestic and gender-based violence to organizations that provide case management, economic empowerment, counseling, and legal assistance. Childcare is available for children age 3+ while receiving services.

Supports survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault through culturally specific, trauma-informed, and bilingual (English and Spanish) services. Their services include: case management, short-term therapy, support groups, safety planning, assistance with reporting sexual assault, referrals for SAFE exams, and more.

Safe Horizon’s Domestic Violence Law Project (DVLP) provides free representation to thousands of low-income and indigent victims of violence throughout NYC in orders of protection, custody, support, and divorce proceedings. DVLP attorneys also advocate for clients within the criminal justice system. Services also provided in Spanish.

Safe Horizon’s Immigration Law Project (ILP) provides free and low-cost services throughout NYC to victims of crime, torture, and abuse in immigration proceedings. ILP has represented hundreds of victims of violence in Violence Against Women Act self-petitions and adjustment proceedings as well as gender-based asylum claims.
