Based on 2020 additions to the laws, we added information to What types of relief from abuse orders are available? How long do they last? in our Vermont Relief from Abuse Orders section as follows:
- We added the fact that if the abuser doesn’t appear at the final hearing, the temporary order can last until the abuser is served with the final order.
- We added the fact that if the victim doesn’t appear at the final hearing, the judge can choose to continue the final hearing for “good cause” to allow the victim another chance to appear instead of always having to dismiss the petition.
We also clarified that the final hearing is usually within 14 days of the temporary petition being granted in the question called Step 3: A judge will review your application
