What factors will a judge consider when deciding alimony?

In determining which type of alimony to order, the amount of alimony, and the length of alimony, the judge will consider:

  1. the length of the marriage;
  2. the age of the parties;
  3. the health of the parties;
  4. the income, employment, and employability of both parties, including employability through additional training, if necessary;
  5. the economic and non-economic contribution of both parties to the marriage;
  6. the marital lifestyle;
  7. the ability of each party to keep (maintain) the marital lifestyle;
  8. any lost economic opportunity as a result of the marriage; and
  9. such other factors as the judge considers relevant and important (material).1
