What factors will a judge consider when deciding alimony?
In determining which type of alimony to order, the amount of alimony, and the length of alimony, the judge will consider:
- the length of the marriage;
- the age of the parties;
- the health of the parties;
- the income, employment, and employability of both parties, including employability through additional training, if necessary;
- the economic and non-economic contribution of both parties to the marriage;
- the marital lifestyle;
- the ability of each party to keep (maintain) the marital lifestyle;
- any lost economic opportunity as a result of the marriage; and
- such other factors as the judge considers relevant and important (material).1
