The Wisconsin State Bar offers the Lawyer Referral Service (LRS) and Modest Means Program. Through the Modest Means Program, they may be able to refer you to a lower cost attorney if you qualify. To determine if you qualify for this program, complete the Modest Means questionnaire at https://www.wisbar.org/forPublic/INeedaLawyer/Pages/Modest-Means.aspx. Call the Lawyer Referral Service (LRS) for more information on hiring an attorney or to learn more about available legal resources. Attorneys referred through LRS agree to charge no more than $20 for the first consultation, up to one half hour, plus a $30 fee to use the LRS. In some cases, you will resolve your legal issue at the first meeting. If your problem requires work beyond the first half-hour, you will be charged the lawyer’s regular fees. Visit the LRS page in Spanish at https://www.wisbar.org/forPublic/INeedaLawyer/Pages/LRS-Espanol.aspx.
Lawyer Referral Services
If you are a victim of abuse, you may want to ask the Bar Association’s Lawyer Referral Service whether or not they screen for lawyers who are experienced in handling domestic violence cases. For a suggested list of questions to ask regarding the lawyer’s fees and experience when interviewing an attorney, go to our Choosing and Working with a Lawyer page.
