What is the penalty for violating the state's firearm laws?
Under Utah state law, any violation of a protective order, including a violation of the firearms restriction, is a Class A misdemeanor. In most cases, the penalty for a class A misdemeanor can be:
- up to 364 days in jail;
- a fine of up to $2,500; or
- both.1
