Finding a Lawyer

Legal Assistance

Find free legal assistance using the U.S. government’s Find Legal Aid page.

Legal aid organizations may provide free or low-cost legal services to victims of abuse and others who qualify. Even if the organization does not have a lawyer available to represent you in court, you may want to ask if there is someone you can consult with to get advice.

Lawyer Referral Services

Find referrals for private, paid attorneys through your state and local bar associations using the ABA Lawyer Referral Directory.

Lawyer referral services usually work as follows:

  1. They will do a brief intake to understand what your legal issues are.
  2. They will then match you with a private lawyer who best fits your needs.
  3. You will speak with the lawyer for a short initial consultation, and then you’d decide if you want to hire the lawyer for your case.

The fee for the referral service and the initial consultation is set by the service and is typically somewhere from $15 to $50. You would have to ask the lawyer about the cost to hire him/her after that.

If you are a victim of abuse, you may want to ask the lawyer referral service whether they screen for lawyers experienced in handling domestic violence cases. For a suggested list of questions to ask a lawyer about his/her fees and experience, go to our Choosing and Working with a Lawyer page.
