Step 3: Service of process

The abuser must be served papers that tell him/her about the order of protection. The order is not enforceable until the abuser is served and the order must be served within one year of the date it was issued. After granting an order of protection, the court shall provide the order to a law enforcement agency or a constable to arrange for service. The agency or entity serving the order is supposed to provide confirmation of service to you as soon as they can. If they cannot serve the order within fifteen days after receiving it, the agency or entity that is attempting service is supposed to notify you of this fact and continue to attempt service.1
