To terminate your lease, you must complete these two steps:

1. provide the landlord written notice requesting termination of the rental agreement on a date that both you and your landlord agree upon, which must be within the next 30 days. You must provide this written notice within 30 days after the domestic violence or sexual assault happened although the landlord can allow you to terminate your lease based on an incident that happened more than 30 days ago if the landlord chooses; and
2. give your landlord one of the following:

• a copy of your protective order that must have been issued based on the domestic violence or sexual assault; or
• a copy of a police report or other law enforcement report that proves that you reported to law enforcement that you were a victim of domestic violence or sexual assault.¹

In addition, if your landlord asks you for one or both of the following, you must provide:

• a receipt or signed statement that the order of protection has been given to law enforcement to be served upon the abuser; or
• in writing, the name and address, if known, of the respondent against whom you have your order of protection or police report.²
