Consequences for failure to pay support *
The consequences for failure to pay child support may vary in each state. Generally, some of the penalties may include the following: the parent can have his/her driver’s license or other license suspended (such as a business or liquor license), s/he can be put in jail, s/he can get a judgment issued against him/her for the money owed which the custodial parent would be able to enforce, s/he can have to pay a penalty if s/he “willfully” fails to pay support, etc. I do not know the specific consequences in the state that issued the child support order against the other parent. You may want to call a legal services agency in your state to ask what the consequences are and what things you would have to do to enforce the child support order if s/he doesn’t pay (for example, you can ask if you might have to take him/her back to court yourself or if there is a state agency that handles paying you the support, if they might go to court for you).
