Can email be encrypted?

Thank you for reaching out to us. Although I am not specifically familiar with this topic, I reached out to the Safety Net Project at our organization (National Network to End Domestic Violence) and I did receive some information that I hope is helpful. Please keep in mind that we cannot provide legal advice but rather only general information.

Are you asking this question because you want to be able to email and you are afraid that someone is going to hack into your account and see your communication. If this is the case, please know that email is not really a secure method of communication and there’s many different levels and ways of interception.

In terms of encrypted emails services, we cannot vouch for any services - there are a few that exist, one of which is called hushmail.com and another service that lets people email anonymously is Tormail.org, which is an anonymous email service provider. A person installs Tor on his/her computer and it basically hides the IP address. This isn’t an encryption service per se however. Again, I cannot vouch for either service in any way.

A person could also add encryption to his/her current email services (Outlook, Gmail, etc.). Basically a person encrypts the email, and the person receiving it must have a key to “unlock” the encryption. This site explains it and has instructions on how to do it. http://lifehacker.com/how-to-encrypt-your-email-and-keep-your-conversati… Again, I am not vouching for these services but offer it for your information only.
