Restraining Orders

Out-of-state enforcement -- police not enforcing order

There’s an organization that is sometimes able to help in the interstate enforcement of restraining orders called the National Center on Full Faith and Credit. They can be reached at 1-800-256-5883, ext. 2.

In the meantime, you may have the option of registering your protective order with the clerk of court in your area. The sheriff’s department is supposed to enforce the order whether or not it’s registered with the courts in your area, but sometimes this can help convince them to enforce an order. After you register it with the clerk, it generally goes into the statewide protective order registry, which any law enforcement officer throughout the state can check to see that you have a certified protective order. Here’s the contact info for the clerk of the court in your county: [INSERT CONTACT INFO OR LINK]

Before registering your order, you may want to contact a domestic violence program in your area. While most areas do not notify your abuser when you register an out-of-state order, some do. Knowing what will happen in your area can help you decide if registering your order is right for you. [STATE AND LOCAL PROGRAMS]
