Restraining Orders

.Will V's boss know about an RO against the abuser? Will it show up on a background check?

Whether or not a restraining order will show in in a background check done by an employer may depend on what entities or records the employer checks. Some background checks may include a search of one’s criminal history, which may only show arrests or convictions. Other background checks may search the National Crime Information Center Registry (NCIC) where civil protection orders are registered. However, once a protection order expires, I do not know if it’s still visible in the NCIC. Also, I am not sure how many employers other than law enforcement or government agencies have access to the protection order registries. If a person is applying for a government or law enforcement job, the background check may be able to access more information than a non-government or non-law enforcement employer can access. Therefore, it’s possible that even protection orders that were dismissed or that expired can still be visible in these sorts of detailed law enforcement or government background checks. Perhaps a lawyer in your state could research the law on this a bit more to figure out if the type of order that was issued against you will be visible in the type of employee background check that you envision may be performed on you.
