Restraining Orders

.How can I find out if my RO is still valid?*

As you can see from our website (here: LINK TO QU CALLED WHAT TYPES OF ROS ARE THERE AND HOW LONG DO THEY LAST), protection orders generally last [FILL IN TIME FOR FINAL RO] but there can be exceptions. If a person wants to know if his/her order is still valid, and s/he still has the order, often s/he can look on the order itself to see when the expiration date is. If the person does not have a copy of the order anymore, s/he may want to call the courthouse where s/he got it to ask if the court clerk can look it up in the court files to see when it expires. It’s possible that the court clerk may ask that you go to the courthouse in person to show ID to prove who you are before the clerk gives you that information. Here is a link to courthouses in STATE so you can call the courthouse you went to if you want to: LINK If it is still valid, you may want to ask for another copy of it to keep with you.

Also, since the police may likely have the order registered in the state registry, sometimes a person can his/her local police precinct to look up the protection order in their system to see if it’s currently in effect.

If your order has expired and you feel that you need another one, if a new incident of domestic violence has happened, here is information about how a person can apply for a new one and more information on orders of protection in [STATE}: LINK Also, here are other ways to stay safe: LINK
