Lawyer Referral/Do I need a lawyer?

Lawyer referral - for friend/family when it's unclear if there's abuse

If she can afford a lawyer, a lawyer referral service can help her find a lawyer who has experience in this area of law. If he’s abused her, ask the lawyer referral service whether they screen for lawyers who are experienced in handling domestic violence cases – not all lawyer referral services do this. She may also want to check with her local domestic violence program or legal aid association to see if they can refer her to a private attorney who is experienced in representing victims of domestic violence.

If she can’t afford one, she may be able to get help from legal aid, who provides free or low-cost legal help in some cases. If they can’t help her, they might be able to refer her to someone who can take her case on a sliding scale fee or for free. Some legal aid organizations that can give referrals don’t advertise that they do - she should be sure to specifically ask for a referral if she needs one. If there’s domestic violence involved, shelters and other domestic violence organizations may also be able to provide her with a referral for someone who can take her case for a lower fee. She may also want to try any law schools in her area because sometimes they have legal clinics and can take cases for free.
