Homeless - suggestions for housing

You asked for any suggestions regarding housing that might be able to help you. I wanted to mention that some domestic violence programs have transitional housing programs in addition to their emergency shelter programs. Transitional housing is designed to help domestic violence survivors get back on their feet, recognizing that going through an abusive relationship can have a huge toll on someone’s assets, finances, and ability to find housing. I am not sure if your local organization operates a transitional housing program or not, but I wanted to provide our list of Advocates and Shelters in [STATE] in case there was a program that you hadn’t yet tried, or is in a nearby location.

[PER T HOUSING TEAM - You can use this website https://www.justice.gov/ovw/awards to look up programs that received OVW funds. If you search by state, look for programs that received “OVW Housing” awards. These are usually transitional housing programs. They said the awards only last two or three years so that would be as far back as you would want to look.]

I also wanted to mention that a local Department of Social Services may be able to offer eligible people assistance, including emergency housing, food stamps (SNAP), etc. Here is the link to the [STATE DSS PAGE] in case that might be helpful. Many communities also have public and/or subsidized housing for low income people that allows them to pay a small percentage of their income as rent, while the rest is paid by the government. These programs are often administered by the local Public Housing Authority or Neighborhood Housing Services. There might be a waitlist, and there might also be a priority for domestic violence survivors or people with children. The folks at your local DSS should know what housing programs exist in your area.

You can also find a link for places that help people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness on the government’s website.
