V asks for financial resources (money)

Getting financial help to relocate or for legal fees is something that we are asked about often and it’s always one of the hardest things to find. It may be possible that a local domestic violence program or shelter may have access to charities or other grants that provide money to low-income victims in need. Here is a link for local programs in STATE if you want to call some to inquire. [INSERT STATE HYPERLINK.]

If you are legally married to this person, another possible way to get financial support may be through a protection order against a spouse or a divorce proceeding in which the person asks the judge to order immediate spousal support. However, not every state does this and if it is ordered, it would not be a large sum upfront but rather could be monthly payments ordered. Also, if two people have a child in common, a similar request may be made for immediate temporary child support through a protection order, divorce, or separate child support case. Here are links with information about protection ordersdivorce, and child support just in case you want to learn more. [INSERT STATE HYPERLINKS.]

[INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING AS APPROPRIATE IF THE PERSON IS MAKING A GENERALIZED REQUEST FOR FINANCIAL HELP.]

I also wanted to mention that a local Department of Social Services (DSS) office may be able to offer eligible people assistance, including cash assistance, emergency housing, food stamps (SNAP), etc. Here is the link to the [STATE DSS WEBSITE] in case that might be helpful.

We also have links to some national financial and economic empowerment organizations.

Lastly, leaving an abusive relationship can be a very dangerous time for the victim - here are some danger signs to look out for and some other ways to stay safe.
