A filed divorce petition before V - explaining V can file counter-petition
[EDIT THE FIRST SENTENCE ACCORDINGLY:] You mentioned that your husband filed for divorce before you could. You may already know this but just because one person files a petition with his/her claims and his/her ground for divorce, it doesn’t mean that the other person can’t file their own petition with their own claims and grounds for divorce. A petition that is filed after the original petition is called a “counter-petition.” So, often times, a person who is served with a court petition will file:
- a response to the original allegations and
- a counter-petition with his/her own allegations.
You can read about the grounds that a person can use to file for divorce in STATE on our website. [HYPERLINK]
I know that navigating the court process on one’s own can be daunting. If you have to represent yourself, you may be able to find some helpful information on our Preparing for Court - By Yourself page. Hopefully, though, you can find legal help through one of the links on our Finding a Lawyer page. [HYPERLINK]
