Criminal Charges / Crimes

What is an arraignment? How soon will a person be arraigned?

Although the exact procedures may vary from state to state, at an arraignment, usually a person charged with a crime enters a plea (like guilty or not guilty) and bail is set. Sometimes an arraignment is done by telephone conference or video conference and sometimes a person charged with a crime will go to court and see the judge. At arraignment, the person might be released on his own recognizance (without bail), bail might be set, or a person may be denied bail and sent to jail to await the trial. [ADD THIS ONLY IF THE USER ASKS IT: I’m not an expert on [STATE] law, but the statute (law) I found says that: [look for a statute that says how long a person can be held before s/he has to be arraigned in that STATE - NOTE TO STUDENTS: please paste the text of the statute you find for the hotline client and the link of where you found it for your reviewer.]
