I am not happy with my attorney. How can I fire him/her?
Although I am not specifically familiar with [STATE] laws, generally, an attorney can be fired just like any other person who is hired to perform a specific service. In general, if someone has signed a retainer to hire an attorney and s/he is not satisfied with the attorney’s work and wants to fire the attorney, s/he may want to talk to the Bar Association to ask if there are specific steps they recommend to fire the attorney, such as doing it in writing, sending it return receipt requested, etc. If you want to communicate with the [STATE] Bar Association to get some advice, here is a link to their website: LINK TO THE ‘FOR THE PUBLIC’ SECTION OF THE BAR ASSOC WEBSITE If a client still has money left on the retainer that was not already used up by the lawyer, s/he may want to include that in the letter to ask for the remaining money to be returned. Also, a client may ask for copies of his/her file, court papers, etc. so that s/he can take that to another attorney.
If you feel that your attorney has committed behavior that is unethical, this is the link that explains how a person files a complaint against an attorney in [STATE]: LINK
