How do I postpone (adjourn) my court date?

The procedure for postponing (or adjourning, as it is also called) a court date may vary from county to county, courthouse to courthouse. Therefore, you may want to call the clerk’s office to ask if there is a way to adjourn the case before the court date. You may be able to fax over a request to the court or there may be a form at the courthouse to fill out - I can’t say for sure. One thing to think about, however, is that often times clerks may make errors and so after you adjourn the case, you may want to confirm on the day before the court date and/or the morning of the court date that the judge received your request for an adjournment – otherwise, the judge may think you are defaulting (not showing up) and may grant the petition against you or dismiss your petition.
