A restraining order or protective order is a legal order issued by a state court which requires one person to stop harming another. In Maryland, there are several types of orders explained below.

Some restraining orders are issued in criminal court and some are issued in civil court.
- Domestic violence protective orders
A civil order that protects you from harm by a family or household member.
- Peace Orders
If you do not qualify for a domestic violence protective order, but you have been the victim of abuse and need protection, you may be able to get a peace order.
- Moving to another state with a Protective Order
Your MD Protection Order may be enforceable in another state.
- Enforcing your Out-of-State Order in MD
If you are planning to move to MD or are going to be in MD for any reason, your protection or restraining order may be enforced.
