In 1999, Colorado changed the legal term "custody" to "Parental responsibilities." Both terms mean the physical care and supervision of the child; including major decisions concerning the child (under 18 years of age). The term was changed to discourage those involved in divorce proceedings or allocation of parental responsibilities disputes from treating the children like property.
"Joint allocation of parental responsibilities" is when both parents have equal rights and responsibilities for major decisions concerning the child, including the education of the child, health care, and religious training. The court may designate one parent to have sole power to make certain decisions while both parents have equal rights and responsibilities for other decisions.*
