The WI State Bar has the following services: Lawyer Referral and Information Service (LRIS), Modest Means referral service, and Lawyer Hotline. Through our Modest Means service, we may be able to refer you to a lower cost attorney if you qualify. The Lawyer Hotline is a callback service that helps answer basic legal questions for members of the public. We also have special programs for members of the military, veterans and first responders. Call the Lawyer Referral and Information Service at (800) 362-9082 for more information on hiring an attorney or to learn more about available legal resources. Attorneys referred through LRIS agree to charge no more than $20 for the first consultation, up to one half hour. In some cases, you will resolve your legal issue at the first meeting. If your problem requires work beyond the first half-hour, you will be charged the lawyer’s regular fees.
Lawyer Referral Services
If you are a victim of abuse, you may want to ask the Bar Association’s Lawyer Referral Service whether or not they screen for lawyers who are experienced in handling domestic violence cases. For a suggested list of questions to ask regarding the lawyer’s fees and experience when interviewing an attorney, go to our Choosing and Working with a Lawyer page.
