Included in this list are organizations that provide free or low-cost legal services to victims of abuse and others who qualify.  Even if the organization does not have a lawyer available to represent you in court, you may want to ask if there is a lawyer who you can consult with to get advice.  Please note that we list the organizations by the town/city or county where the office is located – however, many offices may likely serve multiple counties.  We indicate the “counties served” whenever possible.  You can click the blue “View All” button to look through the complete list of organizations.

The Indian Law Office provides representation to low income Native Americans in civil matters involving Indian law issues. Additionally, Judicare's Indian Law Office provides legal assistance to Indian tribes on a variety of tribal projects through contracts and agreements with individual tribes (e.g. tribal code development, lay advocate training, tribal/state judicial relations). Judicare has one of the best Indian law libraries in Wisconsin, including resource materials specific to Indian tribes and Indian legal issues from Wisconsin as well as nationally.

The WI State Bar has a Modest Means referral service and Lawyer Hotline. Through our Modest Means service, we may be able to refer you to a lower-cost attorney if you qualify. The Lawyer Hotline is a callback service that helps answer basic legal questions for members of the public. We also have special programs for members of the military, veterans and first responders. (Note: The WI State Bar also has a regular Lawyer Referral and Information Service for hiring a private attorney. Attorneys referred through LRIS agree to charge no more than $20 for the first consultation, up to one half hour. In some cases, you will resolve your legal issue at the first meeting. If your problem requires work beyond the first half-hour, you will be charged the lawyer’s regular fees.)
