If you are a victim of abuse, you may want to ask the Bar Association’s Lawyer Referral Service whether or not they screen for lawyers who are experienced in handling domestic violence cases.  For a suggested list of questions to ask regarding the lawyer’s fees and experience when interviewing an attorney, go to our Choosing and Working with a Lawyer page.

The Lawyer Referral program makes referrals for individuals who wish to hire an attorney. Does not make referrals for clients who are in need of free legal services. Fees are as follows: $10 processing fee for Personal Injury, Criminal Defense, Worker's Compensation and $45 referral fee for all other cases except SSI/SSDI appeals. All referral/processing fees are non-refundable. Clients will receive a free 1/2 hour consultation with the lawyer that they are referred to and may receive up to 3 referrals.

The Tacoma-Pierce County Bar Association Lawyer Referral Service provides for members of the public seeking attorneys in most areas of law, including bankruptcy, business, collections, consumer, contract, criminal, elder law, employment law, family law, immigration, intellectual property, military law, personal injury, real estate, tax, wills and estates. The program is sponsored as a public service for those who need an independent lawyer’s advice and can pay a reasonable fee.

The program connects clients who are middle-income earners with lawyers who offer legal assistance at a reduced cost. The lawyer will charge you fees and may request an advance deposit, but at a lower rate. On average, attorney hourly fees are $200. Through the program you might receive a reduction between 25% and 75% of this amount.
