Before a Restraining Order can take effect, you must have your papers served to the abuser. Also, if you are filing for custody, you will need to have paperwork served to the abuser/other parent.
In Connecticut, there are no county-wide sheriff's departments, so you must have your papers served through the State Marshall's Department or through a City Sheriff, Constable or Borough Bailiff.
Anyone needing legal papers served, such as Restraining Orders, will get the list of current State Marshalls from the court clerk when they obtain their Temporary Restraining Order.
You may also call your local City or Town Clerk's office to find a list of City Sheriffs, Constables, or Borough Bailiffs who also can help you get your papers served. Ask for the list of "process servers."
