UPDATED August 8, 2007
A restraining order or protective order is a legal order issued by a state court which requires one person to stop harming another. In Georgia, there are several types of orders explained below.
Some restraining orders are issued in criminal court and some are issued in civil court.
Provides protection if a family or household member is hurting you or threatens to hurt you.
If someone other than a family or household member is hurting you, there are different laws designed to protect you.
Requires the abuser to post bond (through giving money or property to the court) that the abuser will lose to the court if he violates the judge's order or commits a crime with respect to you.
Your Family Violence Protection Order may be enforceable wherever you move.
If you are planning to move to GA or are going to be in GA for any reason, your protection or restraining order may be enforced.
